The Bernal Coyote

Before the Owls there was the Coyote. She was first spotted by early morning dog walkers in the late summer of 2003. Soon amazing photographs of the beautiful animal was traveling email box to email box. By November, the Bernal Coyote was on the cover of the San Francisco Chronicle and also became the inspiration for a natural history film, Bernal Hill-Still Wild at Heart.

Until recently we'd almost forgotten about our local coyote, when this article on urban wildlife seemed to imply that she was still around. After asking our neighbors and web readers for an update we got this note from Frank Medina in Illinois.

"During my visit this past March, I was walking around the mountain early one morning and the coyote ran across my path, bushy tail and all, about on his/her way down the hill toward Folsom Street from up on top of the mountain.  He/she was not running across the road very fast so I got a very good look at him/her and he/she did not appear to be afraid of me at all.  So this is a visual confirmation that the coyote is definitely still up there on the mountain and is thriving. I always enjoy receiving your weekly newsletter, many thanks for my contact with the neighborhood."

One of our favorite photographers, Sharon Beals, gave her permission for us to use some of her excellent photos of the Bernal Coyote here. Enjoy. (And if you have photographs of your own that you'd like to add, please email us.)
