This building now has a vegetarian restaurant in it, but it was a meat market up until last year.
The branch was threatened with closure in the early nineties, but neighbors organized to save it.
There wasn't much there yet. The steep hillside was too costly to build on.
At the time this picture was taken residents were petitioning to get Ogden Street paved. It still has some unpaved parts.
Residents used to call this area cow patch. (This is when it wasn't referred to as Peralta Heights.)
